Attendance/Reschedules/Cancellations:

Your lesson time is reserved for you each week and a commitment to attend your lesson at that time is expected throughout the year.

Please understand that the tuition you pay reserves an exclusive weekly time in the schedule for your child. Unlike a doctor or hairdresser, I cannot re-sell that time nor can I create extra teaching time in which to give lessons.

Your lesson time cannot be replaced and will be forfeited if missed or cancelled regardless of the reasons or the amount of time/notice given. There are no tuition credits or refunds for lessons you miss or cancel. Rescheduled or "swapped" lessons that are cancelled are forfeit.

Therefore,... if a lesson must be missed, please follow the instructions below...
With 24-hours notice, the student may be offered a time to reschedule if a time becomes available during studio hours within the week.
If a reschedule is unavailable, students may use the Swap List (Lesson Exchange Roster - request one from the teacher) if a conflict arises (sporting event, school function, doctor's appointment, birthday party, emergency, sickness, vacation, holiday in which the studio is open, etc). The student forfeits the lesson if they are unable to find an exchange. The family that is exchanging the lesson needs to let me know immediately of any updates. If you do not want your phone number released on the swap list, please notify me as soon as possible.

Note: all national holidays, except as noted on the included schedule, including those on a Monday, are regularly scheduled studio lessons.

Parents are welcome to attend the lessons, but it is sometimes best for the student to have piano lessons alone with the teacher. Please arrange for a babysitter for young kids. If you have any questions, it is best to wait until a later time (by emailing or calling) so we can make the most use of the lesson time we have.

Students should arrive on time at their lesson. Please do not come in early, as it disrupts the lesson in session. I do my best to finish a student's lesson on time. If a student is still in the studio, please come in quietly. Students who arrive late will not have their lesson time extended and will end on time. Any students who are 10 or more minutes late to their lesson without calling the teacher with a reason may forfeit their lesson (the teacher will close the studio and count it as a missed lesson). If I am unable to come to the door or it is locked, please ring the doorbell and wait on the deck (I may be brushing my teeth or did not hear you come!). I always check the porch and driveway when expecting a student. If you have any doubts, please call my phone. I apologize if this ever happens. If the teacher is late or “behind schedule”, the students will be given the full lesson (if they have arrived on time) or will be given a refund for the time missed at a later time.

Please park in the first driveway or in front of the house on the road (with plenty of room for others to go by).

Please remove your shoes before entering.

Students who miss/forget, cancel, or reschedule/swap an excessive number of lessons (during the course of one year, September-August) – teacher’s discretion - will be dismissed from the studio.

Students will receive a refund only for a lesson cancelled by the teacher (if rescheduling the lesson is not possible).

In the event weather prevents you from coming to your lesson, please call me as soon as possible, so I can notify other students. An "inclement weather” lesson day will be offered to all at a later date (teacher’s discretion), but no credit or refunds will be issued for the missed/rescheduled lesson.

Please pick your child up promptly when the lesson ends.

My role is to provide piano instruction to interested pupils who will support that instruction with regular attendance, practice, and commitment to assignments.

Lesson Duration & Permanent Cancellation/Dismissal from the Studio:

In the event lessons must be discontinued for any reason, please personally address the teacher one-month (30-days) in advance. Lesson fees will not be refunded.

Students who have a casual attitude toward attendance (private lessons, recitals, etc) not only hurt themselves musically but create extra, unnecessary work for the teacher and slow down his/her overall progress, falling behind in lessons.

I reserve the right to terminate the lessons of any student for any reason at any time, but I take it very seriously and will not drop a student for frivolous reasons.

The following situations are possible reasons for immediate termination:

If a student repeatedly fails to demonstrate a commitment to, or interest in, studying the piano by not practicing, not completing assignments, etc, including, but not limited to: adequate practice time on a weekly basis, bringing notebook to the lesson, reading the assignment sheet, marking practice on the assignment sheet, and making an honest attempt to improve what we worked on in the lesson.

If there is damage done by a student/family to the studio (students will be billed for the damage)

If tuition is past due (lessons will not continue if tuition is 2 weeks past due, until the account is made up)

Failure to pay tuition on time (more than 2 times in a row)... the studio has a late fee for late payments

Excessive absences or schedule changes - teacher's discretion

Abuse of the swap-list by intimidating families or using phone numbers for other reasons than they are intended - immediate dismissal

Lack of interest and/or uncooperative attitude during lessons - conference with parents will be called

Disrespect, in any way, to anyone in or related to the studio by the parent, student, or family member - immediate dismissal

Refusal to participate in the bi-annual Studio Recitals – 17 & under

Parents failing/refusing to purchase proper equipment (necessary books, instrument, metronome, flashcards, etc). Expenses can mount, so I do my best to work with the families if something is going to be financially tight and hard to deal with. However, all students must have a proper piano (tuned at least once each year) or full-sized, digital piano with weighted keys, proper pedals, and bench before beginning lessons.

Practicing

Students are expected to practice everything assigned every day of the week, except one day (you pick).  J

Emphasis must be placed on mind/concentration spent, not just time spent. Practice times will vary according to the student's skill level. Parents are expected to take an active role in monitoring and encouraging regular, distraction-free practice. This can include listening to your child practice and commenting upon the improvement you hear.

If a student is having difficulty practicing or is reluctant or resistant at home, please let me know as soon as possible.

Progress will only be accomplished if the student spends time every day practicing.  Lack of preparation will result in slow improvement, which will be evident in their lessons.

Students must fill out the practice report (often included on that week’s assignments), have it signed by a parent, and return it to their next lesson.

Specific practice directions are given each lesson and must be followed.
*10-20 minutes a day for 6 days of the week for early or young beginners (parental involvement)
*30 minutes a day for 6 days of the week for beginners & elementary
*45 minutes a day for 6 days of the week for intermediate students
*60 minutes a day for 6 days of the week for advanced students

The studio has instituted an incentive program called “Piano Points”.  Each week, the student will receive points on various accomplishments related to the piano or music in general.  The student may use those points to “purchase” prizes from the prize drawers.
The categories include (all past-tense), *practice 5, 6, or 7 days this week, *it’s my birthday week, *perform in a recital, *arrive on time, *attend a concert, *sit quietly & listen, *bring all books & materials, *compose & name a song (extra for writing it on paper), *tell a friend about piano lessons, *help a sibling with their piano lesson at home under parental supervision, *complete theory workbook, *listen to classical music (write name of song & composer), *attend an extra music class (choir, groups, rehearsals, etc) in the studio, and *finish a music book.
